Antony Stepanovich Arensky was a Russian composer, pianist, conductor and teacher. In 1882 he graduated with a gold medal from the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied composition and specialized music theory with Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov.

From 1882 he taught many different disciplines at the Moscow Conservatory. He had many students, including Sergey Vasil’yevich Rachmaninoff, Georgy Eduardovich Konyus, Arseny Nikolayevich Koreshchenko, Aleksandr Borisovich Goldenweiser, Konstantin Nikolayevich Igumnov and Reinhold Moritzevich Glière.

He wrote numerous compositions, including operas, a ballet, cantatas, symphonies and orchestral works in other genres, concertos, works for chamber ensembles, vocal and piano compositions, etc.

He wrote a number of works on music theory, including “A Short Guide to the Practical Study of Harmony,” “A Guide to the Study of Forms of Instrumental and Vocal Music,” “A Compilation of [1000] Exercises for the Practical Study of Harmony,” etc.
