The 5th Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition

The 5th Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin  Competition is going to be held in Moscow, from 21st to 30th September, 2013. The competition is dedicated to the memory of the Great Russian violinist David Oistrakh.

The purpose of the competition is popularization and development the best traditions of Russian violin performing art, discovering young talent musicians supporting them in their professional potential.

The Competition has 2 age groups: Junior (10-16 y.o.), Senior (17-28 y.o.) Most of the participants are already winners of prestigious violin competitions and they perform in famous concerts halls of the world. The applications for participation in the 5th Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition should be sent before 31st May, 2013.

Besides the special prizes and prize amounts (the highest prize of the Senior group is 15000 Euro), winners will get the invitation to perform on the best stages of Russia and Europe.

General terms and conditions of the 5th Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition

The 5th Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition is going to be held in 21-30 September, 2013.

The 5th Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition is organized by the Non-profit organization “David Oistrakh Charity Foundation”. The competition is held in collaboration with Moscow Tchaikovsky conservatory with the support of the Moscow Government’s Department of culture and the Russian federation Ministry of Culture.

The competition is dedicated to the memory of the Great Russian violinist David Oistrakh.

The Moscow International David Oistrakh violin competition is the member of the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY).

The Purpose Of Competition - popularization and development of the best traditions of Russian violin performing art, discovering young talented musicians supporting them in their professional potential.

Conditions of participation in the 5th Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition

Age groups

The auditions are held in two age groups:

  • Junior - from 10 to 16 (inclusive)
  • Senior - from 17 to 28 (inclusive)

The age of the participant in determined in accordance with the start of the competition.

The First Prize-winners of the previous Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competitions are not allowed to take part in the same age group.

General conditions concerning the rounds of the competition

The preliminary section

Selection for participation in the competition is based on a DVD recording. All recordings will be played to a jury to select participants. Candidates must enclose with their application a good-quality, clearly indexed DVD, which must include, in the following compositions:

o    for the Junior Section:

  1. Masterly piece
  2. One of Paganini's Caprices or Wieniawski op. 10 or op. 18 (1st violin)

o    for the Senior Section:

  1. Caprice by Paganini
  2. The first and second parts of Bach's Sonata number 1 to 3 for solo violin

The recording is should be made in the period between 31/05/2012 and 31/05/2013. The works presented on the DVD do not necessarily have to be included in the program for the public rounds of the competition.

Winners of international competitions, members of the EMCY or WFIMC (World Federation Of International Music Competitions), are allowed to participate without pre-selection. In this case, instead of DVD-recording must be attached to the application documents confirming participation in the competitions that are members of EMCY or WFIMC ( World Federation Of International Music Competitions).

First Round

Number of candidates admitted to the first round is not more than 20 participants in Senior age group and not more than 20 participants in Junior age group.

Second Round

Number of candidates admitted to the second round:

  • For the Junior age group - not more than 12 participants
  • For the Senior age group - not more than 10 participants

Third Round

Number of candidates admitted to the third round for Junior and Senior age groups is not more than 6 in each group.

Auditions of third round for Junior age group are held with the Chamber Orchestra, for Senior age group - with Symphony Orchestra

All auditions are held in public.

Competition program

All programs of the competition must be performed by heart. In exception are the sonatas of the II round for both age groups.

The contestant must perform the program indicated in the application form. Any changes in the program are not allowed.

The jury reserves the rights to shorten the program or to stop the performing in case if the results of the performing are obvious for the jury.

Rules of application

The following documents should be send to the Organizing Committee: 

  • The application form Word
  • DVD recording (requirements for DVD recording)
  • The performing program with indication the duration of each piece
  • Prompt resume with information about: the educational institution, the teacher, information concerning the participation in other music competitions
  • Copy of the educational documents
  • Photocopies of passport or birth certificate
  • Photographs (not less than 600 x 800 pixels in the E-form) or 6 x 12 cm. in printed form
  • Copy of the invoice with the payment of the registration fee
  • A document confirming participation in the competitions that are members of EMCY or WFIMC

All indicated documents for the 5th Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition must be received to Organizing Committee by mail or e-mail not later than the 31st of May, 2013.

Registration fee

The registration fee of 100 Euro is due immediately upon receipt of the admittance letter and should be remitted free of charge to the organizer.

In case of failure of candidate from the competition documents and application fee will not be returned.

The applicants admitted to the competition will receive an official invitation from the Organizing Committee not later than 15th of July 2013 after the preliminary audition of the DVD.

Awards and prizes

At the end of three rounds for Junior and Senior age categories, a Jury awarded the title of the laureate of the contest and awarded prizes and awards.

The Prizes will be presented in ruble equivalent according to the Rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation on the day of payment.

State and public institutions, creative unions, mass-media, firms and private persons may be the founders of special prizes and awards. In coordination with the Organizing Committee and the Jury of the competition.

In accordance with the results of the contestants within the limits the Jury reserves the rights to:

  • not to award some prizes;
  • to divide prizes between the contestants.

The decision of the Jury is final and is not subject to question, reveal or appeal.

Winners of the competition may be invited to take a part in the concerts organized by the David Oistrakh Charity Foundation.

All participants of the competition will receive a Certificate of participation.

All participants that were not admitted to the next round will have the possibility to have a personal consultation with the members of the Jury and discuss with them their performance.

Winner of the competition should get the prizes and diplomas in person.

The Prize winner will have to take part in the final concert. In case of his refusal he may be deprived of the prize.

Additional terms and conditions

For all participants and their accompanying personas Organizers will send an official invitation to the competition for the procedure of getting visa at the Consulate of the Russian Federation.

Participants who pass the selection of DVD and admitted to participate in the competition, will be provided of free accommodation in the hotel 3* for the duration of their participation in the competition.

Also, the organizers of the Competition are ready to book a room in the hotel for the contestant’s accompanying persons.

In case of necessity the organizers will provide the accompanist.

Media and rights

With his or her registration the participant declares that no third party holds any copyright and/or other legal rights on video or other audio material which is recorded or created during the competition.

Furthermore, he or she declares that he/she transfers such rights to the organizers of the competition at no cost and for an unlimited period of time, applicable worldwide. This applies in particular to the participants’ agreement (which he/she declares upon registration) to allow the organizers’ unlimited use of video and/or any recordings of the participants during the competition for free and world-wide.

Participants have no claim on remuneration. Private and other recordings during the Competition by means of video and/or other recording devices of any kind whatsoever are forbidden.

Requirements for DVD recording

You should:

  • Send a link for download DVD-videos with Google Disk, mail Disk etc. (for records sent by e-mail)
  • Video format: MOV, MPEG4, AVI, WMV, MPEGPS, FLV, 3GPP, WebM
  • Size: at least 720x576 or 720x480 pix
  • The sound should be of high quality
