Yevgeny Shcherbakov was born in 1969. He graduated from Leonid Sobinov Music School No. 1 of the City of Yaroslavl (1984), from the Music College of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory as a concert pianist (the class of Alexander Sobolev, Honored Artist of Russia, 1988), and then from the Moscow State Conservatory as a composer (the class of Prof. Konstantin Batashov), both graduate and postgraduate studies (1993 and 1995 respectively).
Teacher of counterpoint and Musik Formbildung at the Music College of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory (since 1993). Member of both Russia’s Union of Composers and the Composers’ Union of the City of Moscow (since 1997). He performed several recitals in Paris (2002). He taught workshops on composition, counterpoint, Musik Formbildung, orchestration and concert piano performance in Vietnam (2005–2008). Associate Professor at both Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory (since 2018) and Russia’s Gnessins Academy of Music (since 2022). Laureate of several international competitions.
Major works: Symphony (1993); Slavonic Overture for orchestra (1997); Arabesques (1999) and Elegy (2004) for string orchestra; two sonatas (1991 and 2018) and a suite for violin and piano (1997); sonatas for two violins (1987), for solo cello (1992), and for solo violin (2012); B.A.C.H. Fantasia for solo piano (1997); King David’s Psalms for male choir (1998); The Scythians, a poem for baritone and piano on the verses by Alexander Blok (1999); Insomnia, a poem for soprano and piano on the verses by Marina Tsvetayeva (2001); two poems on the verses by Anna Akhmatova: The Rosehip Blossoming for soprano and piano (2004), and The Midnight Poems for soprano and organ (2010); A Song about the Doggess for large mixed choir on the verses by Sergei Yesenin (2011); A Short-term Rain, 14 miniatures for middle voice and piano on the verses by Valentin Zagoryansky (2011); Concertos for organ (2011), for violin and orchestra (2019), for cello and orchestra (2020).
Regular participant in the Moscow Autumn annual contemporary music festival (since 1998). Yevgeny Shcherbakov’s music is performed by Sveshnikov State Academic Russian Choir, by The Seasons and the Cantilena Chamber Orchestras, by the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Governor of Yaroslavl Region, by the Chamber Orchestra of the Governor of Tver Region, as well as by such renowned ensembles and outstanding soloists as Alexander Trostyansky (violin), Rustam Komachkov (cello), Lyubov Shishkhanova (organ) and others. Author of several dozens of scholarly articles for Russia’s Big Encyclopedia (since 2013).
